Signs of Dental Implant Failure

When deciding to replace one or several missing teeth, dental implants are a permanent and durable restorative solution. This dental procedure has a very high success rate, it is very predictable, and the restoration is very effective, which makes dental implants one of the most common choices.

Complete dental implants are made of three parts:

  • The titanium body inserted in the jawbone acts as a tooth root
  • The abutment attached to it that is the connection between the root and crown
  • The crown that is fixed to the abutment and acts like a natural tooth

And even though dental implants are very safe, just like with any other procedure, it can happen that it fails. The reasons for implant failure can be different and vary from person to person. Yet, there are signs you can pay attention to and follow up with your dentists as soon as you are noticing them.

Signs of Dental Implant Failure

The process of dental implant integration in the jawbone is known as osseointegration. During this process, the body develops bone cells that surround the implant and helps it to integrate with the jawbone. If the integration is not done properly, it’s called an implant failure.

When you notice some or all of these signs, it can be an indication of implant failure:

  • The constant movement of the implant
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Infection

It is normal to experience some degree of discomfort for a few days after getting the implant, but if the pain persists or it’s too intense, it is better to check with your dentist.

You might need extra bone support, or you suffer from bruxism. Gum disease or osteoporosis can also lead to implant failure.

When you notice signs that could indicate an implant failure, immediately contact your dentist and schedule an appointment. The dentist will investigate, find the cause and look for an adequate treatment.

Always follow your dentist’s instructions after getting an implant and follow up with them to make sure the process goes without incidents.
